みなさんは東北で最大級のボードゲームフリーマーケットの存在はご存知でしょうか。私は先日、日本の東北地方、山形県長井市で開催されている「東北ボードゲームフリーマーケット（みんなの文楽）」に行ってきました。今回はこちらのイベントについて紹介していこうと思います。
Are you aware of the largest board game flea market in Tohoku? I recently visited the “Tohoku Board Game Flea Market (Minna no Bungaku)” held in Nagai City, Yamagata Prefecture, in Japan's Tōhoku region. This time, I'd like to introduce this event.
まず初めにこちらのイベントですが、イベント当日に行く場合は夜行バスで向かうか早朝の東北新幹線で山形駅から羽前成田駅まで1時間半で行くことができます。・・・が今回は遠方から来る場合に観光も楽しめることを紹介できるように前日入りを選択しました。降りる駅は新幹線の赤湯温泉駅です。
赤湯温泉駅は最近リニューアルされた駅で中にはとても綺麗な待合室もあります。Wi-Fiも使用できるので連絡手段に困ったときはここを活用しましょう。
First off, regarding this event: if you plan to attend on the day itself, you can either take a night bus or catch the early morning Tōhoku Shinkansen from Yamagata Station to Uzen-Narita Station, which takes an hour and a half. However, this time, to allow those travelling from afar to enjoy some sightseeing, we've opted for arriving the day before. The station to alight at is Shinkansen's Akayu Onsen Station.
Akayu Onsen Station is a recently refurbished station featuring a very clean waiting room inside. Wi-Fi is also available, so make use of this facility should you encounter difficulties with your means of communication.

駅のすぐ近くにビジネスホテルがあります。贅沢しない場合はこちらへ。ただし土日は満席になりやすいので早めに予約をとっておきましょう。
There is a business hotel very close to the station. If you don't mind not being too fussy, this is the place to go. However, it tends to fill up quickly at weekends, so do book well in advance.

今回は温泉のある街に来ているのでせっかくなのでちょっと良い宿を選択しました。丹波館は明治元年から続く歴史ある旅館で温泉に入ることもできます。とても素敵な旅館で一泊することができました。
This time, as we're visiting a town with hot springs, we thought we'd make the most of it and choose a rather nice inn. The Tanbakan is a historic inn dating back to the first year of the Meiji era, where you can also enjoy the hot springs. It was a truly splendid inn where we were able to stay for one night.
宿の近くには飲食店も充実しているので山形県の海や山の幸をいただくことができます。山形県は日本酒が有名だったりします。
Near the inn, there is an abundance of restaurants where you can enjoy the bounty of the sea and mountains of Yamagata Prefecture. Yamagata Prefecture is rather famous for its sake.
温泉の近くには烏帽子公園という紅葉の名所があり、夜はライトアップされた美しい景色を楽しめます。
Near the hot springs lies Eboshi Park, a renowned spot for autumn foliage, where visitors can enjoy the beautiful illuminated scenery at night.
イベント当日、赤湯温泉駅から羽前成田駅まで山形鉄道フラワー長井線を利用して向かいます。行く際は現金と硬貨を用意しておくとを強くお勧めします（片道670円：2025年時点）。
On the day of the event, we will travel from Akayu Onsen Station to Uzen-Narita Station using the Yamagata Railway Flower Nagai Line. We strongly recommend having cash and coins ready for the journey (one-way fare: ¥670 as of 2025).
さてここからが問題なのですが、羽前成田駅から西根コミュニティセンターまで徒歩41分を歩かなければなりません。私は健脚なので徒歩を選択しました。みなさんもエッセンシュピールを四六時中歩き回っていると思いますので多分大丈夫だと思います。道中、日本の原風景を見ることができるので徒歩も悪くないですよ。
もし徒歩が難しい場合は運営に連絡してみてください。日本で手に入らない極上のボードゲームを献上すれば道は開かれるかもしれません（この一文は冗談）。
Now here's the catch: you'll need to walk 41 minutes from Uzen-Narita Station to the Nishine Community Centre. I'm quite fit, so I opted to walk. I imagine you're all used to walking round Essen Spiel non-stop, so you should be fine. The walk isn't too bad either, as you get to see some idyllic Japanese scenery along the way.
If walking proves difficult, do contact the organisers. Presenting them with some top-tier board games unavailable in Japan might just smooth the path (this last bit is a joke).
さて、紹介していませんでしたが実はこのイベントの主催者は日本で最大級のニュースサイトを運営しているTable Games In The World（TGiW）の小野卓也さんです。彼は日本のいわゆるお寺の住職さんをしながらボードゲームの紹介を日々行っています。道中に彼が運営するお寺に行くことができます。紅葉がちょうど見頃の季節なので足を運んでみると良いでしょう。日本語のニュースサイトですが紹介記事もありますので良ければ閲覧してみてください。
Now then, I hadn't mentioned it before, but the organiser of this event is actually Mr Takuya Ono of Table Games In The World (TGiW), which runs one of Japan's largest news sites. He serves as the head priest of a temple in Japan while also introducing board games on a daily basis. You can visit the temple he manages along the way. As it's the perfect season for viewing the autumn leaves, it would be well worth paying a visit. Although it's a Japanese news site, there are also feature articles, so please do take a look if you're interested.

会場の西根コミュニティセンターは元々学校だった場所を作り替えた公民館です。所々で学校の面影があります。
The Nishine Community Centre, the venue, is a community hall converted from a former school building. Traces of its past as a school can still be seen in places.
東北ボードゲームフリーマーケットはみんなの文楽という複合イベントの一部であり、ボードゲーム以外にも山形県の特産品や名物などを食すことができます。またステージではアメトーーク！の若手プレゼン大会にも出演したいけだてつや氏（ボードゲーム大好き芸人）によるショーなども行われました。
The Tohoku Board Game Flea Market forms part of the Minna no Bungaku multiful-event, where visitors can sample Yamagata Prefecture's specialities and local delicacies alongside board games. The stage programme featured a show by Tetsuya Ikeda (a comedian and avid board game enthusiast who also appeared on the young comedians' presentation contest on Ame-talk!).
お子さんからお年寄りまで幅広い世代が集まるボードゲーム体験コーナーもあります。何気に珍しいボードゲームも遊べるかもしれません。
There is also a board game experience corner where people of all ages, from children to the elderly, gather. You might even get to play some rather unusual board games.
TOHOKU BOARD GAME FLEA MARKET
東北ボードゲームフリーマーケットは午後1時から開催され、800点以上のボードゲームが出品されています。現在手に入らないボードゲームや珍しい珍品などかなり数多くの品揃えとなり、国外からも訪れる価値のあるイベントかと思われます。開場前は70人ほどの列ができているため、早めに並んでおくと良いでしょう。またたくさんのボードゲームを買うことになるため、大きなカバンを持っていくことをオススメします。
またお支払い方法は現金のみです。こちらも忘れずに持っていきましょう。
Tohoku Board Game Flea Market commences at 1pm, featuring over 800 board games for sale. With a substantial selection including hard-to-find titles and rare collectibles, it promises to be an event well worth travelling from abroad to attend. Given the queue of around 70 people forming before opening, it's advisable to queue early. Furthermore, as you're likely to purchase numerous board games, bringing a large bag is recommended.

イベント終了後は、打ち上げで山形県の郷土料理「芋煮」をいただきながら様々なボードゲームを遊ぶことができました。エッセンシュピールとはまた趣の異なる隠れた日本の人気ボードゲームイベントです。GENCONやPAX、UKGEなどに行ったことがあるなら次はこのイベントに行きましょう。
After the event concluded, we enjoyed Yamagata's local dish “imo-ni” at the after-party while playing various board games. This is a hidden gem of a popular Japanese board game event, offering a different flavour to Essen Spiel. If you've been to GENCON, PAX, or UKGE, this is the next event to attend.
